A slip joist is a specialized ceiling grid component designed to absorb linear movement in building structures caused by thermal expansion/contraction or minor settling.It typically consists of two or more nested U-channels that slide relative to each other.Installed in place of a standard main joist in areas prone to movement,such as long corridors or at expansion joints in large ceiling areas,its function is to allow the grid system to expand and contract longitudinally within a defined range.This helps mitigate stress buildup that could lead to grid distortion or ceiling panel cracking.
