A ram extruder is a specialized extrusion device that operates on a reciprocating linear motion principle. It abandons the traditional screw-based shear plastication method, instead using a hydraulic or servo motor to drive a plunger (piston). This action exerts extremely high linear pressure on the material (typically powder, granules, or pre-formed billets) within a sealed barrel, forcing it through a die to form the final shape. This unique working principle makes it the goog choice for processing materials with ultra-high viscosity, extremely poor flowability, high filler content, or those highly sensitive to shear. Examples include ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and pre-mixed ceramic or metal powder feedstocks. Its operation is inherently batch-based, but quasi-continuous production can be achieved using alternating dual-plunger or triple-plunger systems.
